TIPS FOR RAJ
North Indian bashing nets online support
Mansi Choksi I TNN

Mumbai: MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s north Indian propaganda is not just limited to controversial public rallies. Thackeray and his anti-north Indian stand have found a major following on the internet with several anti-bhaiya online communities on social networking sites and hundreds of other groups which hail the MNS chief as the sole custodian of Maharashtrian culture.
While MNS state secretary Pravin Darekar said that online communities were not part of the party’s pre-planned strategy, he said they were more than welcome because they benefited the cause of the party. “If these online communities are supporting us, we are happy,’’ he said, adding that the online communities were not started by MNS workers.
When told that there were also a few anti-Raj Thackeray communities, Darekar said it did not matter because the number of supporters of the party surpassed them.
While most of the members of the communities are below the age of 40 and are from the city, Navi Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, there are also some NRI members.
Some of the members are professionals, some are MBAs and some are students. The membership strength of each of the online groups is anything between a few hundreds to 6,000 users.
Thackeray may have been subject to a gag order to watch his words when in public domain, but there’s no checking on what is being said in these networking sites which can be visited by whoever has a computer and an internet connection. Discussion topics like ‘bhaiya bhagavayche aapale plans’ (plans to get rid of north Indians) evoke plenty of responses like starting Mumbai-Bihar Bhaiyya Bhagao trains to dump north Indians in them by the dozen and pack them off to their homeland, urging the city police to slap north Indians at sight in order to ‘straighten’ them out, destroying paan shops, taxis and autos to curb their source of income and force them to leave the city and making it mandatory for north Indians to only speak in Marathi.
Y P Singh, who had filed a case against the MNS chief in the State Human Rights Commission on behalf of activist Medha Patkar, said there were numerous provisions under law to ensure that anti-communal sentiments were not spread in any medium. “This is nothing but another way of spreading hatred among people. The police should take action under various sections of the Indian Penal Code to curb the spreading of communal sentiments. It can also apply sections of the Information Technology Act to check this kind of unlawful behaviour.’’
Singh added that it was logistically impossible for the police to book offenders because of the vast number of users in each of the online portals and suggested that the police ought to at least book serious offenders to deter others. “There should be some kind of demonstration effect. If one offender is punished, the others will think twice,’’ he said.
However, Mukund Pawar from the Cyber Crime Cell said that these groups were not taken seriously. “We have not received any complaints from anyone,’’ he said, adding that the groups were harmless.
